Meet Emily McDouall
Last year we gave you the first of our members’ stories, so here is the second instalment, the wonderful Emily McDouall……over to you Emily…..
“I joined Mixed Voice for their Christmas Show in 2013, having moved back to Norfolk after living in Manchester for the last 5 years (no musical theatre pun intended, I promise!). It was all thanks to Will Arundell I discovered the company; I asked him for advice on what musical theatre groups there were in Norfolk and he was then running on the buzz from the successful production of Rent that had just finished. He talked of Mixed Voice with such loving adoration, as if they had become an extended family. He talked of the high standards and professional attitude within the company, and in hope of living up to this glorious reputation, I emailed Josh and applied!
Since that first Christmas Show, I have been fortunate to play some dream roles including; Cabaret’s Sally Bowles in the musical revue ‘A Night at the Musicals’, the adorable Frenchy in Grease (just getting to wear the pink wig was a childhood dream achieved!) and not forgetting an unusual/memorable highlight – getting to sustain a top soprano note whilst trampolining with 2 six foot (gorgeous) men in Godspell…….
Mixed Voice gave me the confidence to apply for a 1-year Postgraduate Diploma in musical theatre at some of London’s top drama schools. I was very lucky to be successful and in September 2015, I began a course at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts!
Just as Will previously mentioned, the similarities in professionalism between Mixed Voice and drama school rehearsals are something to be celebrated. We are fortunate at Mountview to work with West End professionals who are currently directing and performing whilst working with us. The platform Mixed Voice gave me was invaluable, enabling me to make a smooth transition from working with an amateur company to industry standards.
I would honestly say, if anyone was thinking of a career in the theatre industry, Mixed Voice are certainly a company to work with. Or even as an audience member; if your purse can’t quite stretch to London or to the touring productions – Mixed Voice offer up quite a remarkable alternative!
I would like to thank Will for introducing me to this wonderful company and Josh for letting me in! A heartfelt thank you to all the other directors, MDs, choreographers, creatives and musicians for putting up with me. I have made a very special bunch of friends over the years, I’m not sure where I’d be now without them!”
The team at Mixed Voice are super proud of Emily and we can’t wait to see her on the West End stage in years to come! We are always excited to see members of our company moving on to exciting new ventures….who knows what new Wills and Emilys we will find in Norfolk this year?!
